Model-actress Ruby Rose to play Kate Kane a.k.a. Batwoman. The character will be introduced in the network’s annual DC crossover event this winter. Additionally, the network has announced that they are also developing a solo series for the 2019-20 season featuring the character. Batwoman will be the first openly gay superhero to headline a TV series.
Rose who is a member of the LGBT community herself, took to Instagram on Tuesday to not only confirm the news, but to also share what it means to her to showcase this kind of representation on TV.
She also discussed the casting announcement on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon where she explained that it’s a part that she’s waited for her whole life.
I feel like the reason I kept getting so emotional is because, growing up watching TV, I never saw somebody on TV that I could identify with, let alone a superhero. I’ve always had this saying — well, not me, Oscar Wilde — but same thing. Which is, “be yourself because everyone else is taken.” So I always live by that motto, and my second motto when I came into the industry is, “be the person you needed when you were younger.” And I feel like one motto led me to the other and I just kept crying about it.
Rose shot to stardom after joining the cast of Netflix’s Orange is the New Black in season 3 as Stella Carlin. She has also had stand-out movie performances in Pitch Perfect 3, XXX: The Return of Xander Cage and John Wick: Chapter 2.
Rose will make her debut in this year’s DC crossover event in December, which will include Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl.
