Donnie Yen Joins Disney’s Live-Action Mulan

According to THR, Donnie Yen will be joining Disney’s live-action adaptation of Mulan.

The actor will be will be playing Commander Tung who is a mentor to Mulan. He joins Chinese actress Liu Yifei, also known as Crystal Liu, who will be starring in the title role. She was selected to play the female warrior after an extensive worldwide search that concluded with her hire in November.

If Yen’s character sounds unfamiliar to you Disney fans, there’s a reason for that. He’s an original character created specifically for the live-action film who did not appear in the animated version.

This will be the second time in recent years that Yen has teamed up with Disney. You may recall that he starred as Chirrut Îmwe in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. 

Mulan was originally set to open in theaters Nov. 2, 2018. However, because it took more than a year to find the film’s star, it is currently scheduled to hit theaters on March 27, 2020. Niki Caro will direct.
