According to The Hollywood Reporter, James Mangold is writing and will direct a Star Wars stand-alone movie centered on the notorious bounty hunter, Boba Fett.
The news comes as Disney and Lucasfilm prepare for the release of the latest Star Wars stand-alone film, Solo: A Star Wars Story which opens today. Solo is the second Star Wars “story” film to be spun-off from the main Star Wars storyline. (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was the first.)
The writer-director, Mangold, who also counts the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line and the Western 3:10 to Yuma among his credits, most recently brought prestige to the superhero genre with Logan, which he co-wrote and directed. It also earned him an Oscar nomination for best adapted screenplay.
Not a lot is known about the film at this point, but ever since Boba Fett made his big-screen debut in The Empire Strikes Back, he’s been a fan favorite. But with his backstory being explored in novels, comics, and TV shows throughout the years, it will be interesting to see what they end up doing.
