The New Venom Trailer Actually Shows Venom

When the first trailer for Venom was released, fans were somewhat disappointed in the lack of Venom. It was basically Tom Hardy doing… stuff. A second trailer has now been released, and while I’m still not very positive about the movie in general, we do get actual footage of Venom in action. However, now that we’ve seen the character in full, which looks great by the way, I get the feeling that the movie may be setting fans up for disappointment.

Spider-Man in the black suitHere’s a thought… How is it possible to launch a Venom movie without Spider-Man or at the very least, Peter Parker? Eddie Brock and Peter Parker are intrinsically linked! Eddie Brock is the opposite of Peter Parker, much like Venom is the opposite of Spider-Man. For those not in the know, Spider-Man was the first person to bond with the symbiote clear back in 1984. When Peter Parker rejected the symbiote, it moved on to Eddie Brock, a disgraced journalist with a grudge against Spider-Man. Together, the symbiote and Brock became Venom, who went on to become one of Spider-Man’s greatest villains. At least until he became a popular anti-hero in the Marvel Universe.

With Sony completely removing Spider-Man from the equation, they have had to drastically rework Venom’s origin story. And when the changes are this dramatic, is the character still the same? From what we can see in the trailer, I’m going to say no. It looks like Brock is actually a nice guy. He also appears to lack the violence and rage that fueled the symbiote in the comics. In the comics, his story was a battle within himself. Something that would happen to a bitter, jealous dude who all of a sudden found himself imbued with superpowers. It was relatable. I don’t know that the movie version of Brock fits that bill. At least not from what we’ve seen.

Also, the newest trailer doesn’t look or feel like a superhero movie to me. Instead, it feels more like a sci-fi horror movie. Maybe that’s what they’re going for, but is it what audiences are looking for? Yes, Venom is a scary monster, but do fans want a horror movie with him in the lead role? I don’t, but maybe I’m wrong. I guess we’ll find out when Venom hits theaters on October 5, 2018.

What do you think about the Venom trailer? Does it get you excited to see the character on the big screen? Let us know in the comments!
